Public Health for Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

The Georgia WIC Program provides nutrition education provided by a nutritionist or registered dietitian  to participating moms.  Education is conducted one-on-one, in group classes or online.

Georgia eWIC is Coming Soon – Fall 2022

Topics covered include:

  • Healthy eating during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Developing healthy eating habits for kids
  • Reading food labels when shopping
  • How to cook healthy, delicious meals
  • A tailored monthly food package for the nutrient needs of the mom and her children during the stages of pregnancy, breastfeeding, infancy, and childhood.  (Only specific healthy foods can be purchased through WIC such as whole grains, dairy, fish, peanut butter, beans, fruits, and vegetables.)

Benefits to Georgia Families:

  • Helps improve healthy behaviors linked to reducing the rate of being overweight or obese in early childhood
  • Leads to increased consumption of whole grains, fruits and lower-fat milk
  • Reduces the risk of child abuse or neglect
  • Increases immunization rates (children who drop out of WIC are less likely to be immunized compared to participating children)
  • Decrease dental-related Mediciad cost (WIC children at ages one to two have less dental-related Medicaid costs compared to non-participating children)
  • Helps improve the health of infants (WIC infants are in better health than eligible, non-participating infants)
