Nominations Open for GAFP Family Medicine Resident Board Positions

Nominations are now open for Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP) Family Medicine Resident Board positions for 2023. The deadline for nominations is Thursday, December 8 and voting will take place December 12-15.

Three open positions include…

⎼ Resident Director voting member (2023)

⎼ Alternate Resident Board Member (2023)

⎼ Alternate Resident Board Member who will serve a two-year term (year 1=Alternate / year 2=Resident Director – 2023-Alternate/2024-Voting)

Background on GAFP Board of Directors

In accordance with the GAFP bylaws, the GAFP Board will consist of two resident board members, each with a one-year term. There will also be two alternate board members; one with a one-year term and one with a two-year term. Nominations must be submitted by Thursday, December 8.

The candidate with the most votes will become the new resident board director (with voting privileges). The candidate in second place will become the resident alternate director serving a two-year term with the second being a voting director (noting that this resident will be ineligible if a third-year resident). The candidate with the most votes following will become the alternate board director serving a one-year term.

Dr. Nijah Burris of Morehouse will serve as one of the Voting GAFP Resident Board Directors for 2023, having served as the Alternate in 2022.

As a board member, your main duties are to be in close contact with your peers and report back to the Board when we meet four times a year, and you will be given first option to participate in the National Conference of Students and Residents, as our GAFP delegates, July 27- July 29 (Kansas City).

Additionally, some of your travel expenses will be covered (see below).

We encourage all four of the resident board representatives to attend each meeting.

Board Attendance Policy

The resident district section has two voting seats. As long as at least two resident board members are in attendance, the others can optionally attend or not attend without being charged with an unexcused absence. It is your duty to be in contact with each other to determine attendance.

If at least two are not in attendance (excluding the approval of an excused absence), then all will receive an unexcused absence for that meeting. However, if at least two delegates are in attendance, then no one will receive an unexcused absence for that meeting.

Excused Absences for Board Meetings

Excused absences include emergency illness/funeral of a close family member or if a Board member must miss a GAFP Board meeting due to a conflict if representing the GAFP or AAFP at another meeting. Absences and excused absences would be reflected in the minutes.

In addition, the Board of Directors voted to allow each Board member to attend one CME meeting per year for free if registered by the early bird deadline.  You may choose from the Summer CME weekend in June 2023 or the Annual Meeting in November 2023.
