Jonathan Cook, D.O., Receives GAFP ‘2022 Family Physician of the Year’ Award

The Georgia Academy of Family Physicians honored Jonathan Mitchell “Mitch” Cook, D.O., FAAFP, with its ‘2022 Family Physician of the Year Award’ during its annual meeting on Friday, November 11, 2022. 

“Dr. Cook’s extraordinary accomplishments and service have brought a real sense of pride to our profession and the science of medicine,” says GAFP Board Chair Susana Ajoy Alfonso, M.D., FAAFP.  “His integrity, commitment to service, and community involvement have all led to the betterment of his patients.”

In addition to caring for his patients at his Clarke-Oconee Family Medicine practice in Athens for nearly 19 years, Dr. Cook has been a clinical associate professor at the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership campus in Athens and the Department of Family Medicine at the Augusta University/Medical College of Georgia in Augusta since 2012.

Dr. Alfonso points out that, “One of the innovative and visionary strategies that Dr. Cook has employed at his practice is to hire staff he believes have the potential to go to medical or physician assistant school, which has proven to be an effective way to infuse new talent into the medical profession in the state.” 

Dr. Cook served as GAFP’s president in 2013, he is a member of GAFP’s Board of Directors in his role as one of GAFP’s delegates to the American Academy of Family Physicians’ (AAFP) Congress of Delegates, and he recently served as a member of AAFP’s Commission on Finance and Insurance.
