The Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and the American Academy of Family Physicians named Dr. John Bucholtz as the Nikitas J. Zervanos Outstanding Program Director Award winner for 2018. This prestigious award each year recognizes a family medicine residency director who has made a significant national contribution to the specialty of family medicine.  The Georgia Academy nominated Dr. Bucholtz for this prestigious award and was the 2017 Georgia Academy’s Family Medicine Educator of the Year honoree.

Dr. John Bucholtz is well-regarded both locally and nationally in family medicine education. This is evident in his work at the Columbus Regional Family Medicine Residency Program in Columbus, Georgia where he has been Program Director and Director of Medical Education since 1993, roles he fills concurrently. This family medicine residency was one of the first “dually accredited” training programs. He has also served as medical director to the Three Rivers Area Health Education Center (AHEC) since 2002. He currently chairs Georgia’s Medical Education Advisory Committee where he makes recommendations to the Georgia legislature on medical education funding and workforce issues.

In 1998, Dr. Bucholtz was elected to the Board of Directors and served as President of AFMRD from 2001-2002. He also served a five-year term on the American Board of Family Medicine, where he was a member of the Executive Committee and Treasurer. He is currently finishing a six-year term as a member of the Family Medicine Review Committee of the ACGME.

Dr. Bucholtz is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and has been involved nationally with AAFP during his 32 years of membership. He has served as chair of the AAFP Commission on Education and as chair of the task force on residency education for the Future of Family Medicine 1.0 project. Dr. Bucholtz also served many years as one of Georgia’s two delegates to the AAFP Congress of Delegates.  Congratulations Dr. Bucholtz!
