Foundation of the GAFP Introduces 2010 Board of Trustees
The Foundation of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians is pleased to introduce the 2010 Board of Trustees and Executive Officers.
Dr. Saria Carter Saccocio, of Rome, has been named 2010 President succeeding outgoing Foundation President Dr. Roslyn Taylor of Savannah. Dr. Edwin (Chick) Flournoy of Albany will continue to serve as Vice President and Dr. Brian Nadolne of Roswell will continue to serve as Treasurer. New to the Foundation Board this year is Dr. Thad Riley of Statesboro.
The Foundation recognizes the contributions of Board Members who rotated off the board in 2010 including: Dr. Edwin Hendricks, who recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan with the Georgia National Guard and outgoing President Dr. Roslyn Taylor. A tireless champion of Family Medicine, Dr. Taylor has provided outstanding leadership and vision to the Board throughout her tenure. Thank you both for your dedicated service!
GAFP Foundation Research Poster Competition Winners Announced
The Foundation of the GAFP Annual Research Poster Competition was held during the GAFP Annual Scientific Assembly November 12-14, 2009 in Atlanta. Posters were displayed in the registration area of the Cobb Galleria for all members to view and were evaluated by Dr. Roslyn Taylor, Dr. Adrienne Mims, and Dr. Rolf Meinhold. Practicing Physician/Fellows, Residents and Pre- Med students from throughout the state participated in the competition.
Pre- Med Category:
1st place: A Survey to Determine the Quality of Self-Care of Children with Asthma in Southwest Georgia – Andrew Heffernan, Courtney Bess (Pathway to Medical School Students)
2nd place: An Intervention to Improve Colon Cancer Screening in Under-Insured Patients in Southwest Georgia - Merritt Williams, Scott Herzog, Nick Dallas (Pathway to Medical School Students)
3rd Place: Survey of Diabetic Patients to Determine their Knowledge about Diabetes: A Pilot and Validation Study - William Moree, Tara Spell, Paul Baker (Pathway to Medical School Students)
Medical Student: There were no medical student entries.

The Foundation of the GAFP Raises Nearly $11,000 with Hawaii Raffle
The Foundation of the GAFP announced its raffle winners at the Georgia Academy’s Congress of Delegates Meeting November 15, 2009 in Atlanta. Mark Hall from Amedisys won the grand prize of a 4- night ocean view stay at the Sheraton Maui, a $1,400 Visa Travel Card, and registration for the Iowa Academy of Family Physician’s Annual Meeting in Maui - CME’s valued at $3,000! Dr. Mitch Cook of Athens won the second-place prize of four park-hopper passes to Walt Disney World.
With just 300 tickets available, the Hawaii raffle raised nearly $11,000 for the Foundation’s programs Many thanks to all who bought tickets in support of the Foundation of the GAFP!
