The lecture, “Newborn Screening-Serving the Family From Birth to the Medical Home,” was presented by James Eckman, MD during the GAFP’s 2009 Summer Family Medicine Weekend in May 2009. The activity was developed to educate family physicians on clinical recommendations geared towards the best care for newborns, and includes information on available screening programs for family physicians.
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify the role of the primary care physician in newborn screening
- Describe specific clinical recommendations for newborn screening.
- Identify the ethical, legal and practical challenges associated with expansion of mandated newborn screening programs.
- Describe the strategies for responding to abnormal newborn screening tests
- Describe the neonatal hemoglobin patterns of normal infants, sickle cell trait, sickle cell anemia, and hemoglobin SC disease
- Describe rationale of the expanded newborn screening panel.
- List the major reasons for neonatal testing for hemoglobinopathies
