Commitment to Student

Foundation of GAFP is involved with several educational and charitable activities including:

  • Paying GAFP and AAFP membership dues for medical students at each of the four medical schools in Georgia. This gives the students an opportunity to learn about the GAFP and AAFP by receiving the publications and attending meetings.
  • Providing scholarship assistance funds for residents and medical students at each of the four Georgia medical schools. This allows the students to enhance their education and training by attending the National Congress of Family Practice Residents and Medical Students.
  • Offering the Sappington Scholarship Award of $500 to graduating medical students from each of the four medical schools in Georgia who will attend a Georgia Residency Program .
  • Hosting a Residency Fair for students at the GAFP Annual Meeting, normally held in November.
  • Provide practice management mini-seminars at residency programs. At these mini-seminars, residents learn how to run an office, including buying equipment, hiring personnel, selecting insurance, marketing a practice, and other details that were not covered in their medical education.
  • Sponsoring Research Poster Presentations for medical students, family practice residents, and family physicians.
  • Continuing to provide support to the Endowed Chair of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, which directly funds the Department of Family Medicine.
  • Providing funding for Tar Wars, a pro-health, tobacco-free education program and poster contest for 5th graders throughout Georgia.
  • Supporting the activities of the AAFP Foundation, including the Herb L. Huffington, MD Memorial Library; informational reference services; clearinghouses; research; Speakers Bureau; Residency Assistance Program; institutional research grants; and health promotion projects.
